What you want your business to employ and serve buyers

7 Things You need to Succeed in Business

Posted by on Oct 1, 2012 in Behavior, Business, Buyer Experience, Passionate Purposeful Performer, People | 6 comments

In Business there are many different opinions about what makes a business successful. In this post, I want you to consider just 7 things to determine the success of your business.

First:Success or Luck

Remember that a successful business meets three needs

  •  your needs and the needs of your staff. This means money and satisfaction.
  • The needs of your buyers and suppliers. Your product or service satisfies your clients
  • The needs of the community in which you operate. You comply and pay your way and the community is better off for you being there.

Second

Remember that money and time are interchangeable. Money buys you time and time earns you money. Life is a journey and it is important to live for today. You need to work every day in a way that keeps you passionate and excited about what it is your are doing. If you look at many “rich” business people they keep very busy doing either business or helping others do business better.

Third

Retirement was originally meant as a reward for the few that lived to retirement age. As populations increase, there is a growing need for people to take care of themselves until they die. The measure of success is to ENJOY and find pleasure in everything that you do. And along with that comes taking responsibility for your health and well-being for as long as you live. If you own your own business, you decide when and how to retire but having a good succession plan can matter, especially when you no longer have the patience or passion to put up with people.

Fourth

You can live in the “I” world or the “we” world. When you live in the we world you give more people Acknowledgement, Appreciation and Acceptance. These three gifts enable more people to achieve their goals, express their talents and reach their potential. And you also receive more acknowledgement, acceptance and appreciation and that raises your well being instead of your ill being

Fifth

Measurement is important but what really counts at the end of the day is the quality of the man and the woman. Are you trustworthy? Do you keep your word and deliver your best every day? Do you listen to the needs of others? And more importantly, at the end of the day do you feel that today was the best day of your life and you made a difference by being in business.

Sixth

Compliance with the laws, mores and customs may be a pain but while they can change over time, the cost of non-compliance is y high in the long run. And when you break the rules, you break trust.

Seventh

Business is about peole. People make businesses work. People buy from businesses. People consume other products and keep the cycle of money going round. People are what we touch just as we touch people. Always treat others as you would want them to treat you.

And as a final reminder – Have fun, earn funds and keep fit.

To your future

We have met the enemy and the enemy is our apathy

Posted by on Sep 24, 2012 in Behavior, Business, Passionate Purposeful Performer, Vision | 0 comments

Are we drowning in a sea of apathy and if we are how do we get out of it?

Apathy displays itself as not giving a damn. It displays itself as indifference, hopelessness and why should I bother. Apathy is the result of feeling helpless and powerless. We are drowning in a sea of apathy in our businesses, governance, education and daily life.

Apathy

The ways that apathy shows itself include

  • Lack of respect for  each other and their property
  • Increase suicide and depression
  • Reality shows that show obnoxious behavior, abuse and bullying
  • No service, caring or interest in the workplace
  • Bullying both in person and cyber bullying
  • Voting for the least offensive candidate because there is no one running who could do a good job
  • Criticizing those who try to get the job done
  • Ignoring the wrongs around you because you are afraid of being targeted or abused

Is there a solution to the apathy that is overwhelming the world and business?

Probably! But to solve this will require you to take a risk and commit to living today as if it was your last day on earth.

It takes doing your best every moment of every day with whatever tools you have available regardless of what the challenge is.

It takes keeping your word and respecting both yourself and the person you committed to.

It takes a thick skin when people unknowingly or knowingly insult you. Remember most people are self-centered and only see things from their point of view.

It takes stopping jumping to conclusions about what people will say or do in the circumstances.

It takes never regretting your choices but accepting that did your best, kept your word and lived for today.

It takes living the 5 Agreements

Everyone Needs AAA but sometimes it takes a 2 by 4 to get out of the apathy

The three As are Acknowledgement, Acceptance and Appreciation and every human being needs these things every day.  When used in your daily life and in business then we have the opportunity for 3 more As – Action, Achievement, Accomplishment.

Today will you be apathetic or will you fight apathy and acknowledge someone who is different, accept them as being perfectly them and appreciate the differences between you and them and the fact that you are both here on earth for a purpose?

In the comments share how today, you intend to fight your apathy. What will you do today to be the difference you want to see in the world?

To your success

Power, Leadership and Getting the Job done

Posted by on Sep 3, 2012 in Behavior, Business, Buyer Experience, Passionate Purposeful Performer, Purpose, Structure, Team | 0 comments

Leaders need followers. But do the  followers need leaders?

What is it that leaders offer their followers?

There are leaders who blaze a path to make it easier for followers to get to a destination.

But there are also people who want to be leaders so that they can have the power. Usually the power they want is to get things done or to make a difference but sometimes, they want the positional power for the glory and honor that it brings.

Identifying a Leader:

  • A person with vision who wants to solve a problem or make a difference to a specific situation
  • A person who has the passion and ability to enroll others to make a difference
  • A person who wants more for others than for themselves.

What is Power

  • There is power that gets jobs done.
  • There is power that gives energy to  other things to get things done.
  • And there is power that makes others obey or submit to the will of another. This is often seen as power over others.

While there are other types of power, the last one causes more people challenges. There are many stories of how people submitted to evil people and did unmentionable things. Sometimes the person they submit to is called a bully, sometimes they are called a tyrant or a monster.

But the purpose of the power is to get something either done or done for them.

We want to believe that leaders are always good and that good leaders will take care of us. We put people into positions where the power they wield allows them to push boundaries and limits to get the job done. But history teaches us that there are lots of leaders who abuse others, torture. maim and kill any who disagree with them. There are corporate leaders who rule by terror.

Recently articles and books suggest that managers get the job done and leaders take people on a journey. Somehow the people are self motivated to get the job done because they either love or fear the leader.

Is this true?

Do people follow out of love or fear?

Do leaders cajole, push or cause to happen the things that get the job done?

Do leaders use devotion and suggest that a certain behavior or action would please them or do they use force to say that if you trust me you will act in a certain way?

Keep in mind that the leader makes the decisions. The leader after consulting, listening and paying attention, decides what happens next.

We believe that the leader knows best and we accept that the leader must be right. And is easier for many people to just accept that “rightness”

Power over is something that means control of others. When we see it in certain situations, we believe it is bad, like a mother keeping her son in a closet or a man brutalizing a girl for years in his basement, but what about a boss whose standards keep people working 60 to 70 hour weeks in crowded conditions?

And what about decisions voted on without thought because the “leader” says to vote this way or that and you never consider alternates because if you did then you would have to do something different.

You as a Leader

When you find yourself in a leadership position, consider what you do to get the job done. And every leader I have ever known, read and studied, always had a job to do whether it was win a war (Churchill), free a nation (Ghandi) or just win an election (Obama) to stop a war.

Watch how the power affects you.

Do you feel invincible or do you realize the responsibility you hold and have?

Do you recognize that there will be followers who merely follow you because it is easier to follow than think?

Will you keep aware and inform your followers of all sides about your reasons for the decisions you make?

Or will you use your power to quickly get the job done and walk away?

Remember as the owner of a business, you are the leader of that business.

What you say within the business is what will happen because your staff, followers, want to keep their job. Getting the job done will be the result of the power of leadership within your company.
