In business one of the most difficult tasks is to set priorities. And setting priorities is critical if you want to succeed.
What is a priority and why does it matter for success?
A priority is something that needs to be done first or early on. Many time management courses and gurus suggest that you plan your day in order of your priorities.
But few people tell you how to determine a priority.
Priority is based on information about your business and how it is fulfilling its purpose.
Remember purpose is based on three needs – your needs (and the business‘), your buyer‘s needs and your community’s needs.
If you are unwell and the business is stressing you out, your priority is to be healthy and fit for doing the business. It may mean taking time out from the business, going on holiday or just going and getting a massage or doing something you enjoy. Your have a priority to do something each day to keep you healthy and able to function in your business. Find ways to stay mentally, emotionally and spiritually balanced.
Remember when you are emotional, your ability to deal with others is limited. Deal with the emotional first and everything else can fall into place a lot easier. Anything shelved or swept under the carpet emotionally can explode at the wrong time in business.
Next is your buyers.
What do you know about them? Are they buying? If no purchasing is occurring can you fix the situation as that will be affecting your cash flow? Are you constantly finding new buyers? What is the reason for that? What do you know about the buying habits of your buyers? Are you meeting their wants and needs?
Meeting buyer needs is ALWAYS a priority because without the buyer, you have no business.
And last is your community. One of your priorities here might be to pay your taxes or renew a license or do some other compliance task. Failure to perform any of the community priorities could cost you more money, more time or even put you out of business. Keep an eye on the important renewal and payment dates for your business. This is a priority. Mark it in your calendar and ensure the task gets done.
Setting priorities is critical to your business success so make sure you collect the right information at the right time.
